About Invasive Management Area Program (IMA)

Become a volunteer with the Park Authority in our new Invasive Management Area program! Adopt an area, involve your community and help restore Fairfax County parkland.

What is IMA?
IMA or Invasive Management Area Program is a new volunteer-led program with the Fairfax County Park Authority. IMA volunteers will participate in special training opportunities, learn how to restore parkland for lasting results and start working to remove those invasive species!

Why participate in IMA?

  • Learn something new
  • Get your hands in the soil
  • Improve a park area of your choice
  • Meet people with common interests
  • Spend time outdoors
  • Bring together other motivated individuals

What do I have to do?
IMA has two levels of commitment. You can volunteer to be a site leader (application available March 17) or you can become a member of the volunteer corps. Site leaders will go through training (such as the NEST program) and get to help the Park Authority staff pick the spot. Site leaders will be responsible for choosing the dates and times of workdays, recruiting volunteers, and monitoring their spot. IMA Volunteer Leaders will also be required to sign an Adopt-an-IMA agreement. The volunteer corps will get announcements of when workdays are planned and if there is enough space, they'll be able to attend the IMA trainings of the NEST program.

Prior experience with the planning and implementation of community-based activities is beneficial. Knowledge of invasive plants a plus, but not required.
