What is ASCE?

George Mason University's ASCE student chapter provides an academic and social support organization for students enrolled in the civil engineering department. We host activities and meetings to raise awareness about engineering topics, events, and opportunities.

The ASCE trip to Boston, Massachussetts (March 8-10)

A good time was had by all who made the long trip to Boston this Spring. The day after arrival,We attended a short tour (around 1 hour) of the Charles River area on the northeast side of the Big Dig Project. In particular, we met the lead field engineer on the Leonard P. Zakim bridge across the river from Boston to Charlestown. We learned a great deal about the construction of this cable-stay bridge with a 745 foot long main span. It is the widest cable stay roadway deck in the country.

Also, students got a chance to tour the campus of MIT and Harvard as well as enjoy the sights of downtown.

The attendees on the trip were Rob Mehler, Lindsay Held, Israel Arteaga, and Baharak Mohammad.

SAME
The Society of American Military Engineers GMU Student Post

The first question that most students ask themselves when it comes to SAME is, “I am not military; so how can I join SAME?” The answer to that question is simple: you do not have to be military, you do not have to be American, and you do not even have to be an engineer to join SAME.

Purpose of the Society

SAME brings together professional engineers and those in engineering-related fields:

  • To improve and increase the engineering capabilities of the nation;
  • To exchange and advance the knowledge of engineering technologies, applications, and practices

Engineers of all kinds, promote fun and fellowship, add those important professional and business contacts, and end up enhancing our profession, the military and the Nation.

The recently established SAME George Mason University Student Post (or student chapter) is strongly supported by the professional society’s Northern Virginia Post. Through this partnership, the NOVA Post has many benefits to offer the students of George Mason University: scholarships, networking, internships, future full-time opportunities, and mentoring and training from local engineering firms. Of the 16 sustaining members firms of the SAME NOVA Post, approximately 15 of them hire civil engineers – find out who they are at http://www.same.org/belvoir/
