Fairfax
High School Open House
On
October 13, 2004, a group of 11 seniors from Fairfax
High School visited our Department. They were accompanied
by Dr. Carol Kihm, Director of Student Services, who
organized the event. All students were interested in
our Civil, Environmental and Infrastructure Engineering
Program and wanted to learn more about it before making
their final decision on school selection. It was a busy
visit. First, students were taken for a four corners
tour through the Johnson Center. Next, Dr. Mark Houck
talked about Civil Engineering in general and about
education in our Department (his presentation can be
dowloaded from
here). Dr. Michael Bronzini, the Executive Director
of our Civil Engineering Institute, talked about the
Institute, about our internship program, and about various
scholarships available in our Department. He has also
announced a special scholarship of $2,000 available
for a freshman student from the Fairfax High School.
This one-year scholarship will be awarded based on the
recommendation of Dr. Carol Kihm. Finally, the President
of the Student Chapter of the American Society of Civil
Engineers, Mr. Brian Williams, talked about various
professional and social activities of our chapter, about
their previous trips to Singapore and to Poland, and
about a trip being planned to Hong Kong in January of
2005. Six students and a faculty adviser are getting
ready for the trip.
After
formal presentations, a light lunch was served, including
pizza. Next, the students went to a new computer student
laboratory. It has been recently opened with furniture
provided by the local civil engineering laboratory through
our Civil Engineering Institute. In the laboratory,
students watched a demonstration of a unique computer
program, called Inventor 2000 and developed in our Department,
which is based on evolutionary computation and generates
complete designs of steel structural systems in tall
buildings.
During
the entire event, students had ample time to interact
with the GMU students and with the faculty. They asked
many questions and seemed to enjoy the event. |
Scholarship
to a selected Fairfax High School Student
The
Civil, Environmental and Infrastructure Engineering
Department and the Civil Engineering Institute are pleased
to offer the following scholarship to a select Fairfax
High School student. The scholarship will be in the
amount of $2000.00 per academic calendar year and will
be renewable based upon carrying a full academic schedule
of courses, maintaining a 2.50 GPA or above, and participating
in our (paid) summer internship program.
Details
for qualification are as follows. The student will be
recommended by their respective counselor(s) and will
be in excellent academic standing. The student will
apply and be accepted by the Civil, Environmental and
Infrastructure Engineering Department.
The
application process is competitive as we receive more
applications than we can admit.
Advanced Placement courses in Physics and Mathematics
are a plus as the degree program is academically challenging.
Any details omitted are best left to the professionals
at Fairfax High School.
We intend to provide you with detailed application documentation
within a month. The application package will supply
GMU with all the required information for acceptance
and for disbursement of the scholarship funds.
