Students Recognized By ASCE NCS
On Tuesday April 10, students from George Mason CEIE were honored at the annual banquet of the ASCE National Capital Section (NCS). Three scholarship recipients, our outstanding senior, and members of the class of 2007 were recognized for their achievements. Jesse Coleman received the Hummel Memorial Scholarship, and Kalen Bauman and Niroj Shrestha each received an NCS Scholarship. S. Usman Ali was awarded the outstanding senior prize for his scholastic achievement and involvement in the GMU ASCE Student Chapter. The evening featured a keynote address by the President of ASCE National, Dr. Willam Marcuson, recognition of outstanding engineering achievement for a local project (Woodrow Wilson Bridge), and election of over forty members to Life Member status in ASCE. Dr. Bronzini and Dr. Casey were in attendance at the banquet. The faculty, staff, and students of GMU are very grateful for the continued support and recognition of our students by the National Capital Section of ASCE.

CEIE Chair Dr. Michael Bronzini
Testifies before the House Highways and Transit Subcommittee
The Highways and Transit Subcommittee of the House Transportation
and Infrastructure Committee had its first hearing under
the realigned U.S. Congress on Wednesday, January 24.
This was the first hearing to be held on the subject
of the future of the U.S. surface transportation system,
in preparation for the next reauthorization of the surface
transportation program. After opening statements by the
subcommittee Chairman and Ranking Member and several
subcommittee members, the opening witness was U.S. DOT
Undersecretary of Transportation for Policy Jeff Shane.
He was followed by two members of the National Surface
Transportation Policy and Revenue Study Commission that
was established in the most recent reauthorization legislation. Dr.
Bronzini was invited to testify on a panel that also
included noted transportation consultant Alan Pisarski,
and national highway congestion expert Dr. Tim Lomax
of Texas A&M University. Dr.
Bronzini's testimony focused on the importance of preserving the federal-state-local
government partnership that plans, builds, and operates
our transportation system, and on the need for much better
data on system performance.

Journal of
Computing in Civil Engineering
The ASCE Journal of Computing in Civil Engineering is
the premier journal in the area of computing. It
was established about 23 years ago and it specializes
in publishing the leading edge research papers dealing
with novel computing methods, tools, and experimental
results related to computing. It receives submissions
from the entire world and is well known not only in this
country, but also in Europe, Asia, Africa, etc.
Recently, Research Assistant Professor
in our Department, Dr. Rafal Kicinger became an Associate
Editor. Since
Associate Professor Mohan Venigalla has been an Associate
Editor for the last four years, our Department became
the only Civil Engineering Department in this country
having two faculty members serving as Associate Editors
for this prestigious journal. This is another proof
of the unique nature of our Department and of the quality
of our computing-related research. Also, Dr. Kicinger
became the youngest Associate Editor in the history of
this Journal.
Congratulations to Dr. Venigalla and Dr. Kicinger for
their distinguished professional service and for bringing
to our Department recognition associated with serving
on the editorial boards of prestigious research journals.
